A child's perception

We were going through a Bright Lights lesson recently and one of the passages we looked up was James 3:7-8, which reads:

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. (NIV)

Reading this prompted Allison to share a memory. You can figure out where this is going, right?

One day, Allison was in pain because she bit her tongue. Being young, and very literal, Julianne was terrified that her sister was going to die because she remembered learning this verse in Junior church.

We were laughing at the story when Julianne started to explain what else she thought about this passage when she was young. She wondered why Clarence and I had never told her about this secret weapon. Just think-if someone tried to hurt you, you could bite your tongue and spit that deadly poison at them, allowing you to escape. She was so thankful Mrs. Carlson had let her in on the secret or who knows how long it would have taken her to find out?

She had an antidote figured out as well, so that she wouldn't be harmed. Simply press your tongue against the bottom of your mouth, which would release a cold liquid to counteract the deadly poison.

I'm not sure how long it took her to understand the figurative meaning behind the verse. She says she was both relieved and a bit disappointed when she came to that realization.

Wow! That is a great imagination! It is funny how they perceive things, isn't it.

  2. Karen, thank you for the commnet on the prom pics. The theme for the Ripley Jr./Sr. prom was an "underwater" theme. So Janie wanted a dress to reflect that, and she found the purple dress at a 2nd hand store for $25. I was really proud of her, all the other girls were wearing very very tight (around the middle) dresses...and since she will probably only wear it this one time, I was excited she was frugal. We both loved it. She had matching jewels. They had a good time!

  5. That is so very precious!

We never know for sure how some things we take for granted are understood by the young ones.

My cousin was so happy to see my Grandad's head at his funeral. She had been told that the part of him that laughs and smiles was gone....
    Poor thing!

Thanks for your prayers. The tests came back good!
