The new pie plate

My mom was recently very excited to find a 12-inch pie plate.

It's like the one my grandma used when I was growing up, Mom says, though I guess I never paid attention to the size of Grandma's pies. I was always just happy to see pie (unless it was the dreaded mincemeat pie, complete with venison and who knows what else). Shudder. I realize I was a picky eater as a child but even now, with my much broader palate, you still won't find me trying mincemeat pie. Scarred for life, I'm tellin' ya.

Now that I've got that all off my chest...

Mom ended up finding a couple more of the extra large pie pans and gifted me with one. Allison's eyes lit up when she saw it. She loves making pie and Clarence and I, of course, like to encourage our childrens' passions. That's what parents are supposed to do, right?

We're trying to empty one of our freezers and it contains all our frozen fruit and veggies (among many other things-sigh). I was making pumpkin cranberry bread as part of the freezer purge and had half a bag of cranberries left. So, I asked Allison to use some of our frozen apples and the leftover cranberries to make a pie. Ahh, the perfect opportunity to try out the giant pie pan.

I think this is the prettiest pie she's made yet. And it is certainly delicious!

  1. Very cool!

Tim always loved his mom's mock mincemeat pie, so one time he tried real mincemeat pie, and hated it! So I understand your being scarred for life!

  4. Ewww...Gramma's mincemeat! YUUUUUUCK!!!!!! But only cuz it DID have meat in it! WHO in their right mind thinks putting sweet stuff with meat...makes it a dessert??? LOL!!! On the other hand, 'fake' mincemeat...not bad! That pie is the only thing of hers I remember NOT liking!

  5. Penny,

I've never been brave enough to try mock mince pie-too many bad memories of the real thing! I agree, Grandma mostly hit home runs with her cooking-and I'm sure her mince pie was good if you like that kind of thing-thank goodness it was dessert and we didn't have to take a courtesy serving.

Clarence liked his grandma's mock mince pie, too, but doesn't care for the real thing either. I figure if Clarence won't eat it, there's NO WAY I'm trying it!
